Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has issued a damning report exposing the grim reality of life in Gaza under Israel’s ongoing siege. Titled “Gaza: Life in a Death Trap”, the report paints a harrowing picture of relentless destruction, mass displacement, and systematic deprivation.
From Open-Air Prison to Death Camp
Even before the current conflict, Gaza was suffocating under a 17-year-long blockade, restricting movement, access to resources, and basic freedoms. MSF highlights that this blockade has now evolved into a systematic campaign of destruction, targeting every facet of life in Gaza. Bombing raids, forced evacuations, and the denial of essential supplies have created conditions akin to a death camp. There are no safe spaces left; civilians are being targeted in their homes, hospitals, and even in areas designated as "safe zones."
A Healthcare System in Ruins
Gaza’s healthcare system, already crippled by years of blockade, has been obliterated. The report reveals that over half of Gaza’s hospitals are non-operational, and those still functioning lack critical supplies like anaesthetics, electricity, and clean water. Doctors are forced to reuse medical gauze, treat patients on the floor, and send severely injured people away due to overwhelming demand.
The targeting of hospitals by Israeli forces has compounded the crisis. MSF documents how facilities like Al-Shifa and Nasser Hospital have been repeatedly bombed, resulting in mass casualties and forcing evacuations under fire. More than 500 healthcare workers have been killed, leaving Gaza’s medical infrastructure in tatters.
Forced Displacement and Starvation
Ninety percent of Gaza’s population—nearly two million people—has been displaced. Families are ordered to evacuate on short notice, often to areas that are subsequently bombed. MSF notes that this strategy of forced displacement amounts to ethnic cleansing, uprooting entire communities and driving them into overcrowded, unsanitary camps.
Starvation and dehydration are widespread. Israel’s blockade has restricted humanitarian aid to a trickle, and essential items like food and water are weaponised. The lack of clean water has led to outbreaks of preventable diseases, and soaring food prices have forced many into malnutrition. MSF warns that Gaza is on the brink of famine.
Global Responsibility
The MSF report calls for urgent international intervention. It demands an immediate ceasefire, the lifting of the blockade, and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid. The world must hold Israel accountable for its actions, which MSF and legal experts describe as genocide and crimes against humanity.
The situation in Gaza is a stark moral test for the international community. For decades, Gaza was an open-air prison. Now, it is a death camp where millions are left to die in silence. As MSF’s report makes clear, turning a blind eye is complicity.
