The genocide in Gaza produces one horror after another. It risks becoming a blur—but some stories pierce through. The murder of Hind Rajab is one of them.
On January 29, 2024, six-year-old Hind Rajab was travelling with her family in the Tel al-Hawa neighbourhood of Gaza when their car came under fire from Israeli tanks. Six of her family members were killed instantly. Hind, wounded and terrified, remained trapped in the vehicle, she called, pleading for help.
A Palestine Red Crescent ambulance was dispatched to rescue her—after coordination and notification to the IDF—but despite this, it too was targeted and destroyed by Israeli forces. Hind died alone, her desperate cries unanswered.
The Hind Rajab Foundation, based in Brussels, was established in her memory to seek justice for victims of war crimes and to defend the rights of children in conflict. I will write more about the foundation and its work later, but it has already taken action in several other cases, identifying alleged war criminals. On what would have been Hind’s 7th birthday, the foundation publicly named Israeli Lieutenant Colonel Beni Aharon as the commander responsible for the attack. A formal complaint has been filed with the International Criminal Court, accusing him of committing a war crime.
Beyond Hind’s case, the foundation is expanding its efforts. It has filed further complaints against Israeli officials, including Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza since October 7, 2023. These complaints cite collective punishment, forced displacement, and the use of starvation as methods of warfare.
Hind would have turned seven on May 3. She never got to. But we hope her killer—and all others responsible—will one day stand trial and answer for their crimes.
