Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem has released a shocking new report titled "Welcome to Hell: The Israeli Prison System as a Network of Torture Camps." The report presents harrowing testimonies from detainees, detailing widespread abuse, torture, and even deaths in Israeli detention facilities, particularly following the war in Gaza that began in October 2023.
The findings paint a picture of systemic and deliberate brutality, echoing concerns raised by international human rights organisations about Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees. I have also previously highlighted reports from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and scholars documenting Israeli war crimes. The evidence is overwhelming—those who remain silent are complicit.
Key Findings from the Report:
Systematic Torture: Detainees reported being beaten, starved, deprived of medical care, and subjected to physical and sexual abuse.
Neglect and Deaths: B’Tselem documents multiple cases of detainees dying due to deliberate neglect, lack of medical treatment, and excessive violence.
Overcrowding and Dehumanisation: Prison conditions are described as inhumane, with prisoners crammed into small, unsanitary cells, denied basic hygiene, and left without adequate food or water.
Arbitrary Arrests: Many detainees were taken without charge, including minors and elderly individuals, with no legal recourse.
From the report:
Just before the war started, the overall number of Palestinians incarcerated by Israel and classified as "security prisoners" was 5,192, with about 1,319 held without trial as "administrative detainees." In early July 2024, there were 9,623 Palestinians incarcerated in Israeli prisons and detention facilities, 4,781 of whom were detained without trial, without being presented with the allegations against them, and without access to the right to defend themselves.
International Response
This report adds to growing documentation of Israel’s systematic abuse of Palestinians. In recent months, the United Nations and multiple human rights organisations have raised concerns over Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The International Criminal Court (ICC) is already investigating Israeli officials for war crimes.
On November 21, 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza war that began on October 7, 2023. The charges include the use of starvation as a method of warfare and targeting civilians.
Further investigations by media outlets, such as The Guardian, have corroborated these findings, reporting on intensified campaigns of arbitrary detentions, beatings, and abuse by Israeli soldiers in areas like Hebron. Palestinians have reported being detained on dubious grounds and subjected to physical and psychological abuse, reflecting a broader pattern of alleged human rights violations. Additional sources, such as Middle East Eye and Al Jazeera, provide further documentation of these abuses.
Tortured and Raped to Death
B'Tselem’s findings reinforce what many have been saying for years—Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees is a fundamental human rights crisis. Beyond the findings of this report, other documented cases further illustrate the severity of the abuses. One particularly harrowing case is that of Dr. Adnan al-Bursh, a prominent orthopedic surgeon from Gaza, who was detained by Israeli forces and later reported dead under suspicious circumstances.
According to Sky News, Dr. al-Bursh was tortured and sexually abused in Israeli custody. The report cites a captive at Israel's Ofer Prison, who described how Dr. al-Bursh was brought to the prison in a deplorable state, severely beaten and naked from the waist down. He was then left to die in the prison yard, alone and in agonising pain. The Business Standard also reports that Dr. al-Bursh was raped and tortured to death during his detention.
Dr. al-Bursh was one of Gaza’s top surgeons and had worked at various hospitals during Israel's siege on Gaza. His death, following horrific mistreatment, has become a symbol of the systemic abuse endured by Palestinians. Despite the horrifying details, the global response has been underwhelming.
Ironically, back in 2017, former US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller tweeted something that now applies all too well to his own handling of the genocide in Gaza:
”If you've ever wondered what you would have done in 1930s Germany or during the civil rights movement, congratulations: you're doing it now.
